Reds open hot volleyball week

Olympiakos volleyball club has obtained a major advantage over Tirol Innsbruck after its 3-0 win at home in the first leg of the round of 16 of the CEV Cup. The Reds dismissed their Austrian visitors in an easy fashion that bodes well for the return leg, scheduled for next Tuesday in Austria. All sets had the same score (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) showing how dominant Olympiakos was. Ivan Miljkovic was the Greeks’ top scorer with 18 points. Tonight Greek champion Iraklis hopes to leave behind its two straight losses in the Greek league as it hosts Fenerbahce for the Champions League group stage. After sliding five points behind leader Panathinaikos in the A1 table, Iraklis needs a win over the Turkish side in Thessaloniki (7.30 p.m.) to boost the low morale of the team and become the hot favorite for the top spot of the group. Also tonight (7 p.m.), Lamia, conqueror of Iraklis last week, entertains Dutch club Ortec Nesselande for the CEV Cup while the women’s team of Panathinaikos clashes with Croatia’s ZOK Vukovar at 6 p.m. for the Challenge Cup. Tomorrow at 9.15 p.m. the men of Panathinaikos will seek their first win in their Champions League group as they travel to Friedrichshafen in Germany. EA Patras visits French powerhouse Cannes at 9 p.m. for the Challenge Cup. Finally the women’s team of Markopoulo plays at Sparkasse Klagenfurt in Austria at 8.30 p.m. for the Challenge Cup.
