Maroussi snatches win in Greek derby

Maroussi scored a precious away win over Panellinios for the Eurocup last night to stay on top of its pool along with Dynamo Moscow. The visitors, who have showed excellent form in recent weeks, won 71-59 at Hellenikon, on what was practically neutral ground, in front of dozens of Maroussi fans as well. One of the latter threw a firecracker that landed at the feet of Panellinios’s Anthony Grundy seconds before the end. Luckily, he escaped injury. The game was close from the start, with the two sides alternating in the lead most of the time. Panellinios, which has now suffered two defeats in as many games, led 39-37 at halftime but could not keep up with Maroussi in the last quarter. The northern Athens side enjoyed a 20-10 partial score to galvanize their second win in as many group games. Tonight Panathinaikos returns to action in the Euroleague, facing Unicaja Malaga in Spain, while tomorrow Olympiakos hosts another Spanish side, Tau Ceramica, in Piraeus. Both games are crucial for the Greek sides, as wins would bring them closer to topping their respective groups.
