Olympiakos returns with win from PAOK

Basketball league leaders Olympiakos and Panathinaikos confirmed their supremacy on the domestic front yesterday after significant wins over Spanish opposition in midweek. Olympiakos, who overtook Spanish league leader Tau Ceramica on Thursday (73-70) in Piraeus, snatched another win in the league, this time in Thessaloniki over PAOK. The Reds were challenged by their hosts, but eventually won 74-66 to stay alone at the top with 16 wins out of 17 games. Fresh from its Euroleague triumph in Spain over Malaga (81-69) on Wednesday, Panathinaikos thrashed visiting Panionios 97-50 yesterday, narrowly missing out on a double-score in the end. It was the 1000th victory for Panathinaikos in the history of the Greek league, a national record. Panellinios, in third, dismissed Kavala 68-52 away in an easier-than-expected fashion, but Aris remained one point behind the Kypseli club, thanks to its significant win over an in-form Maroussi in Athens (70-66). In the rest of the weekend’s action, Kolossos maintained its impressive home record to beat Larissa 79-70; AEK kept its hopes of a top-eight finish alive with a 69-67 home win over Trikala and Olympia Larissas confirmed its survival in the top flight, beating visiting Aigaleo 77-61.
