Russian clubs outdo Greeks in the Eurocup

Last night was a bad one for Greek basketball in Europe as both Panellinios and Maroussi suffered painful defeats to Russian rivals for the Eurocup. Panellinios went down to visiting Khimki at Hellenikon, its third loss in as many games, which makes reaching the quarterfinals virtually impossible. Khimki won 89-73 thanks to its excellent last period when it enjoyed a partial 28-10 score. Panellinios led 43-34 at the end of the first half but could not match the team of new Spain coach Sergio Scariolo in the second half. Maroussi lost 93-74 at Dynamo Moscow, which is unbeaten after three matches in the same group as Panellinios and Khimki. The first loss for Maroussi in this round of 16 was always likely in Moscow, especially after Dynamo opened the game with a 13-0 score. Tonight sees a crucial match for Olympiakos in the Euroleague as the Reds travel to Poland to play Prokom Trefl. Victory is an absolute must for the Greek league leader after notching one win in two games and with rival Milano having already won in Po-land. Tomorrow Panathinai-kos will be looking to extend its perfect record in the top 16 of the same competition as it hosts Roma in Athens.
