In Brief

Top track and field event in Piraeus tonight One of Europe’s most important indoor track and field meetings will be held at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Neo Faliron tonight, featuring some of the top names on the Greek and European stage. The «Athina 2009» meeting brings together stars such as high jumpers Kyriakos Ioannou (Cyprus), Dragutin Topic (Serbia), Ivan Ukhov (Russia) and Martyn Bernard (UK), pole vaulters Giuseppe Gibilisco (Italy) and Bjorn Otto (Germany) and this year’s world-leading athlete in the 1,500 meters, Russia’s Anna Alminova. The event begins at 4.30 p.m. and the Greek track and field federation (SEGAS) is promising an exciting evening of performances ahead of the European Championship in Turin, Italy next month (March 6-8). AEK needs a win to stay in the Cup AEK hosts Xanthi today (7 p.m.) for the return leg of soccer’s Greek Cup quarterfinals. Manager Dusan Bajevic’s team must overcome the 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Xanthi. Bajevic has stated that the Cup is the main target for the team this season, but Xanthi promises to be no pushover. Edinho will be making his return to the AEK squad after being left out of the team that faced Asteras Tripolis last Sunday. Some 15,000 fans are expected to attend the match at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The winner of this tie will play the team to emerge from the quarterfinal between Panathinaikos and Panserraikos. Barcelona in town Panionios hosts Barcelona tonight for the first leg of the semifinal of water polo’s LEN Trophy and is hoping for a victory, even by a small margin, which would allow it to travel to Spain on March 21 with some realistic hope of reaching the competition’s final. Coach Costas Loudis has scorer Antonis Vlontakis doubtful for the match due to injury. Vlontakis’s absence would be a blow for the Nea Smyrni side’s chances. Ski laurels Greek skier Vassilis Dimitriadis finished first in the slalom event at an international meeting in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He won by a margin of 1.5 seconds from second-placed Antonio Ristevski. In the women’s event Sophia Ralli finished second.
