Crucial hoops victory for Olympiakos

Olympiakos has all but secured the top spot in the basketball league for the regular season, following its 86-84 away win at Panionios last night. In one of the tightest games of the season featuring the Reds, Panionios pressured Olympiakos all the way to the end, but the slender lead the visitors obtained midway through the second half proved enough to give them the win. Two free throws by Lynn Greer sealed the victory for Olympiakos in the last eight seconds. Yiannis Bourousis scored 27 points to lead Olympiakos’s scorers, illustrating his excellent form of the last few months. Olympiakos has therefore maintained its two-point lead over Panathinaikos at the top of the table and only has one more major challenge to face, when it visits Panellinios at Kypseli. The top spot in the regular season secures home advantage throughout the playoffs. That game had been postponed from last weekend, due to Olympiakos’s commitments in the Euroleague last week. In the games played over the weekend, the results were: Trikala 93, Panellinios 88; Kolossos Rhodes 79, Aris 85; Larissa 68, Aegaleo 75; Panathinaikos 80, Olympia Larissas 61; AEK 93, PAOK 85; and Maroussi 82, Kavala 73. Meanwhile, the officials of both Panathinaikos and Olympiakos are preparing for the all-Greek semifinal of the Euroleague, set for May 1 in Berlin. The organizers announced yesterday that the two squads will be staying at different hotels to keep the two sets of fans apart.
