Greek volleyball team in World qualifiers

The men’s national volleyball team is departing today for Portugal to take part in the first round of qualifying play for the World Championship this week. National coach Costas Arseniadis announced on Friday the names of the 12-member squad to compete on May 27-31. They are Vassilis Kournetas and Thanassis Psarras (setters), Costas Christofidelis, Theoklitos Karipidis and Todor Baev (outside hitters), Mitar Djuric, Sotiris Pantaleon and Andreas Andreadis (central blockers), Nikos Roumeliotis and Apostolos Armenakis (opposites) and Giorgos Stephanou and Achilleas Papadimitriou (liberos). Greece’s opponents in Povoa de Varzim will be Romania, Slovenia, Denmark and hosts Portugal. The national team’s first game is on Wednesday against Slovenia. All last week Greece had been preparing at Paiania, eastern Attica, and played three friendly games with Serbia. Greece won twice, both times with a 3-2 score and lost once, by 3-0.
