Women’s basketball team nears top 12
The women’s national basketball team suffered a 62-60 loss to Poland yesterday in its second match for the European Championship in Latvia, but is still looking good to reach the second round. Having beaten Hungary 59-43 in their first game in the tournament on Sunday, the Greeks were leading 60-55 just one minute before the end yesterday. However, they then conceded seven unanswered points, including a volley just two seconds from time. Evina Maltsi was the national team’s top scorer once again with 21 points, after scoring 19 on Sunday. Greece’s main problem was with rebounds, however, as Poland took 44 against just 21 for Greece. Coach Costas Missas’s women will proceed to the last 12 of the tournament unless they lose to Latvia today and winless Hungary defeats Poland by a huge margin. The top three in the group of four advance to the second round, which starts Thursday.
