Spurs player linked with Panathinaikos

French and English press reports have linked French defender Pascal Chimbonda with Greek soccer club Panathinaikos. The Tottenham player, who has one cap with France, may have a contract with the London club through 2011 but he is not in his manager’s plans for the new season. Panathinaikos has been on the hunt for another central defender, having already signed another Frenchman, Cedric Kante, and is reportedly close to signing Swedish under-21 international Mattias Bjarsmyr from FK Goteborg. The player’s agent arrived in Athens last Thursday for negotiations with Panathinaikos officials. Tonight Panathinaikos will play its second friendly game in the Uhrencup, a friendly tournament in Switzerland, facing FC Basel. On Saturday, the Greens defeated another Swiss side, Young Boys BSC 2-1, courtesy of first-half goals by Dimitris Salpigidis and Giorgos Karagounis (from the penalty spot).
