Three Greeks climb junior swimming championship podium

Greek swimmers returned from the European Juniors’ Championship in Prague yesterday with three bronze medals. Less than a week before the start of the summer’s main swimming event, the men and women’s World Aquatics Championships in Rome, three young Greeks ended up on the podium in the youth championship, the final one being the Greek record woman in the 100-meters breaststroke, Maria Michalaka, on Sunday. The Aris Thessaloniki swimmer was third in Prague with a time of 1 minute 09.19 seconds. The other Greek medals in the championship came from Fotis Koliopoulos in the 50-meters butterfly with a national record of 24.36 seconds and Dimitris Koulouris in the 200 meters breaststroke with 2 minutes 14.68 seconds. Greece will be sending a full-strength squad to the Worlds that start in Rome this Friday and last until August 2, hoping that the water polo team and some of its top swimmers will reach the later stages of their respective events. Michalaka will also be in the squad for Rome.
