Basketball league rivals sweat but manage victories
Olympiakos and Panathinaikos survived the challenges posed to them by their opponents in last weekend’s basketball league action to stay ahead on the table with Olympiakos enjoying a point’s advantage. The Reds defeated newly promoted Ilisiakos 79-67 but had to sweat before they gained the win at Zografou. Panathinaikos found itself trailing at home to visiting PAOK at halftime but eventually regrouped to avoid a major upset and win 83-78 in Athens. There are now four teams sharing third place: These are Peristeri and Panellinios (with the former beating the latter 77-73 in a thrilling game on Saturday), Kolossos Rhodes (which registered yet another home win against Kavala, 81-71) and Maroussi (which defeated host Trikala 81-69). Panionios moved up to seventh with its morale-boosting home win over Aris (74-70). For the third round of group games in the Eurocup today, Aris travels to Lithuania to face Siauliai and Panellinios is hosting Polish side Turow.
