PAO stays at top of volleyball table
Panathinaikos retained its position at the top of the Greek volleyball league with an emphatic 3-0 victory at Kifissia on Sunday, ahead of a tough week in Europe. Despite a number of absences, the Greens overcame the resistance of its fellow Athens side to remain one point clear of second-placed Olympiakos. The Reds downed visiting Lamia 3-0 on Saturday. Both leaders are now involved in Champions League ties this week, with Olympiakos traveling today to face Dynamo Moscow in Russia and Panathinaikos hosting Friedrichshafen tomorrow. In the other ninth-round Greek league games: Panellinios thrashed AEK 3-0 at home yesterday to move up to fifth; Iraklis saw off Apollon Kalamarias by the same score; PAOK suffered a 3-1 loss at bottom side Foinikas Syrou and EA Patras returned from Thessaloniki with a 3-0 win over host Aris. Iraklis and EA Patras are joint third, two points from the top. Former Greece setter Vassilis Kournetas has joined Russian giants Lokomotiv Belgorod, the ex-Olympiakos player reportedly stated yesterday.
