Panathinaikos claims women’s volleyball cup Panathinaikos won its fifth Greek Cup in women’s volleyball yesterday, beating rival Olympiakos 3-1 in the final game of the final four held in Rethymno, Crete, over the weekend. Having beaten Panellinios in the semifinal on Saturday, Panathinaikos won its third straight cup by overcoming a strong Olympiakos, which finished top of the league in the regular season. The Greens won 25-22, 19-25, 25-15, 25-21 led by impressive Brizitka Molnar and Georgia Tzanakaki. The men’s cup semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow, with Iraklis hosting Olympiakos in Thessaloniki and Panathinaikos entertaining EA Patras in Athens. Marathon gold The 1896 Olympics Marathon winner Spyros Louis’s gold medal will be officially presented to the Museum of the Marathon Run at Marathon, northeastern Attica, by General Secretary for Sports Panos Bitsaxis on March 29. The first Marathon gold medal in the modern Olympics will then be permanently put on display at the museum, along with the legendary runner’s certificate from the Olympics organizers and the hat that formed part of the traditional uniform worn by the Greek teams at the time. Rugby win The national rugby team scored an important home win over Luxembourg with a 17-9 score at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Saturday. Greece came from behind and scored two tries to edge closer to winning its European Nations Cup 3C group.
