Beer can eliminates Iraklis

Iraklis volleyball club will pay a heavy price for the beer can that one of its fans hurled at the court, hitting an Aris player, as last season’s Champions League finalists have been kicked out of the Greek league playoffs, which will now resume in their absence. A sports judge decided yesterday to punish Iraklis with elimination from the league playoffs, which means the Thessaloniki club will finish the season in the eighth spot and out of Europe next season, as well as having to play two games behind closed doors next year and to pay a 5,000-euro fine. The judge also ruled that there can be no appeal of the decision and that Aris’s Nikos Roumeliotis was not playacting when hit by the beer can, as Iraklis had claimed. Still, Iraklis officials insisted yesterday they would appeal the decision to the supreme sports tribunal ASEAD.
