Favorites reach water polo finals

Olympiakos and Panionios will once again fight it out for the title of the men’s water polo championship, after advancing last night to the league finals. A few weeks after their face-off in the Greek Cup final, which Olympiakos won in extra time, the two favorites will begin their trophy series on Monday, June 14, at Olym-piakos’s home pool in Piraeus. Both clubs advanced from the semifinals, sweeping their opponents with two wins in as many games. Olympiakos saw off Vouliagmeni 9-7 away after its hard-fought 9-6 first win on Saturday, and Panionios defeated PAOK 6-4 in Thessaloniki. The Nea Smyrni club had also won at home two days earlier 21-10. Surprise package Palaio Faliro will play in Europe next season as it stunned favorite Panathinaikos to finish fifth in the league. Last night it won 17-16 in the penalty shootout at home following its away win on Saturday with a 7-5 score.
