Track and field team relegated in Europe

The national track and field team failed to avoid relegation from the European Super League at the European Team Championships over the weekend in Bergen, Norway. Despite the efforts of Periklis Iakovakis and the rest of the 4×400-meters men’s relay team, who finished eighth out of 12 teams late yesterday, Greece ended the competition 10th out of 12 in the overall standings with 187.5 points, just over 30 points from the safety zone, as Spain, which finished ninth, had 218 points. Host Norway (175 points) and Finland (150) were also relegated. Russia is the new champion. Greece will compete next year in Division A, although there were some very good showings by Greek athletes: Stefanos Tsakonas gave an impressive performance in the 200 meters, finishing second with a personal best time of 20.69 seconds. Athanasia Perra came second in the women’s triple jump with 14.37 meters, as did Iakovakis in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.13 seconds.
