Reds clinch another water polo double

Olympiakos secured its fourth consecutive league title in men’s water polo, sweeping Panionios 3-0 in the final series. The Reds defeated their rivals from Nea Smyrni 7-5 in the third game of the series on Saturday to raise the 23rd championship trophy in their history and claim the domestic double for the fourth season in succession. It was again Panionios they had beaten in the cup final on Syros. Olympiakos led 6-2 in Game 3 in Piraeus but Panionios took it down to the wire, reducing the difference to just one goal (6-5), before Manolis Mylonakis scored the last goal of this championship. Crucially, the Piraeus club has secured the double despite the considerable financial problems it has been suffering, with significant amounts of money owed to both players and coaching staff. By contrast, the battle for the third spot is really heating up with Vouliagmeni and PAOK sharing victories after four matches. The fifth game, which is the decider, is taking place today (7 p.m.) in Thessaloniki.
