Greens sell record number of season tickets for soccer

Panathinaikos soccer fans have broken the national record for season ticket sales, as the Greek champion announced yesterday it has already sold over 26,300 for the season that started last month. The previous record was in the 2008-09 period, when it was Panathinaikos again that sold 26,000 season tickets. The Greens are making the most of the great capacity of their home ground, the Olympic Stadium (65,000). Greece’s most popular club, Olympiakos, has a stadium of about 33,000 seats and thus is unable to sell such a high number of season tickets. Panathinaikos was also boosted yesterday by the return to full training of French striker Djibril Cisse, ahead of the tough away game at Aris on Saturday, September 11 (which will take place despite reservations stemming from the presence of the prime minister in Thessaloniki that day), and before visiting the home of the Spanish champion, Barcelona, on September 14 for the Champions League. Late last night, the Greek national team was facing Georgia in Piraeus for its opening in the 2012 European Championship qualifiers.
