Women ready to face Russia

The women’s national water polo team is ready to get its collective hands on the European Championship gold medal, which it will win if it earns victory over Russia tonight (8.30 p.m., live on ET1) in Zagreb. Coach Giorgos Morfesis’s players appear confident as they aim for the title. «Of course, we want the gold medal and this is what we will fight for,» Angeliki Gerolymou stated yesterday, one day after the 10-5 triumph over Italy in the semifinal. «We are ready for the final. We are on the same level as Russia; we have played it several times in the past and it will all be down to the last detail,» she added. «The Russians may have more experience in finals, but if we play with passion, we shall win.» The men’s team lost to Spain 12-11 in overtime yesterday and will play Turkey today for the ninth spot.
