Olympiakos stays on top; Aris wins derby

Olympiakos maintained the top spot in the Super League in soccer, thanks to its rather comfortable 3-1 victory over Olympiakos Volou at home on Saturday. Vasilis Torosidis had given the lead to the hosts at the Karaiskaki Stadium before Kevin Mirallas scored twice, on either side of a Javier Umbides goal for Olympiakos Volou. Spanish winger Albert Riera missed a penalty. Panathinaikos remained in second place, one point off, thrashing Ergotelis 4-1 away yesterday. Djibril Cisse scored twice for the Greens, while Nikos Spyropoulos and Costas Katsouranis also made the score sheet. Mario Budimir was on target for the Cretan side. In the Thessaloniki derby, Aris defeated host PAOK 1-0 last night, thanks to a Javito goal in the second half that has sent shock waves through PAOK. There were some riots reported after the game outside the Toumba Stadium. Elsewhere Kavala defeated Panionios 2-1 to rise to the fourth spot, along with Kerkyra and Iraklis, who shared a goalless draw at Patras yesterday. On Saturday, Asteras Tripolis and Atromitos drew 1-1, while yesterday AEK beat Xanthi 1-0 at home and Panserraikos downed Larissa by the same score. Olympiakos has 12 points after five rounds of games, Panathinaikos 11, Aris nine, Kavala, Iraklis and Kerkyra eight, Olympiakos Volou and AEK are at seven, Asteras Tripolis and Ergotelis have six, Larissa, Xanthi, Atromitos and PAOK have five; Panionios is on four and Panserraikos got its first three points.
