Greece eyes quarterfinals

Greece bolstered its chances for a quarterfinals berth at the World Volleyball Championships, currently being held in Buenos Aires, after overcoming an undefeated USA team 3-2 (20-25, 25-5, 25-20, 15-25, 17-15) in a wild, overtime Group K game yesterday. The victory, helped by an ear-piercing Argentinean crowd pulling for Greece, puts the national team in second place of its group, behind reigning Olympic champion Yugoslavia, which trounced Greece 3-0 a day earlier. The USA is currently placed third, and China – which was to meet Greece late last night local time – last. The two top-placed sides competing in four groups will advance to the quarter finals. Portugal, Argentina, Russia and Italy, the tournament’s defending champion, have already secured their places, while Bulgaria, Japan, Spain and Poland were eliminated on Saturday. With a win and loss from two games, Greece could advance by defeating a battered Chinese side looking for a miracle to keep its hopes of a quarterfinals place alive. China was defeated by both Yugoslavia and the USA without gaining a set.
