Suspect won’t post bail unless convict’s girlfriend is freed

The mother of two convicted members of guerrilla group Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, Christos and Gerasimos Tsakalos, refused on Wednesday to post the 10,000-euro bail payment that would secure her conditional release, saying she would only pay if the girlfriend of one of her two sons is also released from pretrial custody.

The 60-year-old woman, who faces charges of membership of a terrorist organization, was arrested last month on the island of Salamina, together with 22-year-old Angeliki Spyropoulou, an alleged accomplice of November 17 terrorist Christodoulos Xeros and Conspiracy group members, and the 25-year-old girlfriend of Gerasimos Tsakalos.

The lawyers representing the 25-year-old woman yesterday asked an investigating magistrate to reconsider an appeal for their client’s conditional release, which was rejected by a judicial council on Tuesday.
