Anti-fascist rally planned for day that Golden Dawn trial due to start

Anti-fascist groups are planning a protest rally outside Korydallos Prison on Monday when the trial of Golden Dawn’s leadership, MPs and dozens of members and supporters of the party is due to begin despite concerns that the choice of venue could pose a security risk.

The civil servants’ union (ADEDY) has called a four-hour work stoppage, starting at 7.30 a.m., to allow members to join the protest.

Buses are to collect protesters from 20 early morning rallies in different parts of the capital and transport them to Korydallos to join the main protest, which has been organized by the United Movement Against Racism and the Fascist Threat (KEERFA).

The movement is staging the protest to highlight its opposition to Golden Dawn, which has been linked to a string of racist and criminal attacks, while lawyers representing the victims of GD’s alleged assaults and local authorities are pressing for the trial to be transferred to another venue such as the Athens Appeals Court.
