Painting the splendor of the Forbidden City

Concubines clad in rich fabrics, Ming dynasty scions and guards in gilded armor: Jiang Guo Fang?s large-scale works do a grand job of capturing the sumptuous opulence to be found within the confines of Beijing?s Forbidden City.

For nearly three decades, the Chinese artist and professor at Beijing?s Central Academy of Fine Arts was able to stroll around the complex of buildings comprising the ancient palace — an area which for six centuries was out of bounds for regular citizens — and turn what he saw into images stirring the imagination.
