A Public campaign for books

Local bookselling chain Public recently unveiled a major initiative to encourage reading. The campaign?s motto is ?A book is talking about you. Have you read it?? and the project is counting on the support of authors, publishers and other book industry figures.

While so far some 11.5 million people have passed through the company?s 11 outlets, not everyone has bought books. It is this large-scale audience, however, that Public?s campaign is looking to attract, through an effort organized under the aegis of the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI).

The idea is also to improve the current figures which point to six out of 10 Greeks not reading books at all. And this being crisis time, more figures point to the fact that around 40 percent of all Greeks are entertaining themselves at home. Could reading be part of the fun?

The campaign includes radio promotion (Skai and Melodia are acting as communication sponsors) door-to-door pamphlet distribution, libraries for book borrowing set up in public spaces, as well as exploring online potential. Also part of the campaign is a series of events in major Greek cities along the lines of Britain?s World Book Night.
