More time to see the Acropolis

Its opening hours had been a source of grievance for many visitors who had faced closed doors upon arrival.

So the recent news of longer opening hours for the Acropolis of Athens was received as a positive development. The announcement was made by Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos earlier this month.

?Athens is an authentic, lively, cosmopolitan, pleasant and important city which the whole of the world wants to visit,? noted Geroulanos. ?Today we are in a position to announce that from now on the Acropolis will open at 8 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. all year round.?

The new opening hours are possible through staffing changes, said Geroulanos, who also noted that the UNESCO World Heritage Site?s extended visiting hours will benefit both locals and international visitors.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture has announced longer hours for the summer season for a number of museums and archaeological sites around Greece.

The list includes the Thessaloniki?s Museum of Byzantine Culture and Archaeological Museum, as well as the archaeological site of Knossos on Crete.
