Future Library Unconference 2013 held in Athens Dec 9-10

The Future Library Unconference, an initiative of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation organized with the support of the British Council, will meet for its annual conference next week at the Benaki Museum’s Pireos Street annex (138 Pireos St). The event, which takes place on December 9 and 10, will feature over 400 attendees and 55 distinguished speakers from around Greece and Europe. Its aim is to address the current state of public and municipal libraries in Greece and discuss specific plans for their improvement. Successful measures implemented by past Future Library Unconferences include a nationwide program for training librarians, the renovation of a handful of libraries throughout Greece, and the opening of eight children’s libraries in Central Macedonia.

Notable events on this year’s program include a welcome address by Greek poet Kiki Dimoula, performances of Gypsy jazz and a puppet show by the Zlouhtiria theater group from Mytilene. Round-table discussions will feature topics ranging from 3D printing to web archiving.
