Siberian Ballet in Athens

Fans of the celebrated ballets «Carmen» (Georges Bizet) and «Don Quixote» (Ludwig Minkus) will have an opportunity to see these popular works performed by an up-and-coming dance company this week as the Siberian State Ballet performs at the Petra Theater on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Comprising highly talented young dancers from Siberia, as well as the rest of the former Soviet Union, the company is based in Krasnoyarsk and Chelyabinsk. Twice a year the company stages two grand ballet productions in both cities, while the productions often open abroad in countries such as Spain, Britain and Finland. With a varied repertoire, which includes ballets such as «Anastasia,» «Swan Lake,» «Carmen» and «Antigone,» among others, the troupe is also a frequent traveler to Asian countries. From the very beginning, the Siberian State Ballet was recognized for its high standards in dance. Its continued success today, however, is attributed to its artistic director, Sergei Bobrov. Bobrov, a former Bolshoi soloist who succeeded his mentor, the legendary Bolshoi dancer Yuri Grigorovich, is being honored at home this year. He is due to receive the highly prized Russian State Award for his contribution to the success of the Siberian State Ballet on the global dance scene.
