Top Athens Academy award for social good
The Athens Academy awarded a gold medal to the Alexandros S. Onassis Foundation on December 27 for «its outstanding cultural and social contribution ever since its foundation.» Aristotle Onassis left half of his estate for the establishment of a foundation in the name of his son, Alexandros. The foundation was to be active in various, chiefly cultural, fields, conferring international awards and granting scholarships for postgraduate studies. Since 1975 the foundation has grown and carried out its mission according to the letter and spirit of its founder’s will. The Athens Academy’s decision to confer the highest of its 47 awards on the Onassis Foundation represents a just recognition of its brilliant work. Yesterday, senior ministry officials said the matter should be settled to the taxpayers’ satisfaction before February. Sources said the government’s final decision on the matter would depend on a series of anticipated appeals by municipal authorities.
