Fleeting visit for Kozani’s troupe

Christmas Day saw the premiere of the comedy by Asimakis Gialamas and Costas Pretenderis, «Fleeting Youth» (Mias pendaras niatas), at the Veaki Theater. This year’s production by the Municipal Regional Theater of Kozani toured the length and breadth of Greece in summer, with a final staging at the Herod Atticus Theater. «The presence of a municipal theater troupe on a central Athens stage for a whole season shows that the institution (of municipal theaters) has begun to bear fruit,» said Nana Nikolaou, artistic director of the Kozani theater group and director of the performance. The work, a well-known one in the history of modern Greek theater and cinema, is not merely a satire. A situation comedy and a comedy of manners rolled into one, it contains everything imaginable: humor, intrigue, emotion, and sparkling dialogue, as well as major acting roles. For this particular production, «the transfer from open-air theaters to an indoor auditorium has brought only advantages, since the more compact surroundings enable the actors to have a more immediate rapport with the audience and to use all the trappings of their art,» Nikolaou explained. The music and songs are orchestrated by Nikos Dimitriadou (who also sings) and composed by Giorgos Zambetas, the set and costumes are by Dimitris Kakridas and choreography by Vassilis Myrianthopoulos. The cast includes Eleni Gerasimidou, Haris Sozos, Nikos Kapios, Christos Efthymiou, Pelagia Anglelidou and others.«Fleeting Youth,» at the Veaki Theater, 32 Stournari, tel 522.3522. Yesterday, the European Commission said the euro changeover was going smoothly, with Europeans showing curiosity and enthusiasm about their new currency.
