Mahairitsas and Alexiou join forces to open Kerameikos

In the central area of Kerameikos – just a few hundred meters from Omonia Square – a new music venue is opening its doors. Kerameikos, a former cinema that has been refurbished and modernized, will be opened tonight with singer Haris Alexiou and composer/singer Lavrentis Mahairitsas in a program created by Alexiou and Lena Nikolakopoulou and consisting of their older and new solo hits, as well as special double acts, all performed on a special set designed by Giorgos Gavalas. I wanted to be among good company on stage, said Alexiou in a press conference on Wednesday. So we decided to have fun and do all our favorite songs, she added. Mahairitsas, who has topped the charts with his most recent album, To Dialeima Krataei Dyo Meres, is broadly considered a rock music performer, though Alexiou sees him more as a folk musician. She also added that Mahairitsas had agreed to undergo the ordeal of two-month rehearsals that had stretched him beyond his limits because of his affection for her. The program the duo will be presenting at the new venue is over four hours long and it also includes the works of other artists such as Lizeta Kalimeri and Philippos Plakias, who will join Alexiou and Mahairitsas on stage. At the press conference, Lena Nikolakopoulou explained that the new venue aims to become a reference point for poetic song, with a series of events that will constantly be updated. Kerameikos is perfectly suited for a number of large concerts. Its owner, Dimitris Zoubos, explained that its 3,300-square-meter expanse can seat 1,200 people, as well as a restaurant, a small CD store, a tobacconist and an easy-to-reach parking lot. Kerameikos, according to Zoubos, will offer alternatives for all tastes, ages and wallets. 2 tbsps honey
