A tale of love with kids’ toys

“My Dearest, My Fairest» is the performance that dancers and choreographers Joanna Dudley and Juan Druz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola will stage tonight at the fifth VideoDance festival, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute. The festival, organized by the Thessaloniki Film Festival, is held at the BIOS venue in Athens and will run to Saturday. It will then continue at Thessaloniki’s Film Museum from Friday to September 23. The two performers will tell an unusual story of love – a broad musical journey, enriched by children’s toys. The show’s music ranges from Henry Purcell’s love songs to 20th century pop and arias from various Italian operas and is inspired by Dudley’s music material for the production «The Rest of You.» It was first staged at the Berliner Theatertreffen (Berlin’s Theater Festival) and then traveled to Australia’s Barossa Music Festival, where it received the Critics’ Award. Both performers, who choreographed the production together, are collaborators of choreographer Sasha Waltz. Juan Druz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola has performed both solo and as part of an ensemble and has also choreographed numerous productions, while the multifaceted Joanna Dudley has worked as a performer, musician, composer and singer around the world. The festival, which collaborates with several dance and international film festivals, archives and cultural institutions, includes projections, video installations, concerts and various other performances. Films are presented thematically. The show starts at 10 p.m. and admission is 10 euros. Tickets are available at the BIOS venue, at 84 Pireos (tel 210.342.5335).
