Translation awards; new literary events

The winners of this year’s State Literary Translation Prizes were announced on Monday by the Culture Ministry. Joerg Schaeffer won the award for a rendition of a work of Greek literature into a foreign language with «Poems,» his translation of works by C.P. Cavafy into German. The book was published by University Press Winter GmbH. The prize for a translation of a work of literature in a foreign language into Greek went to Thomas Skassis for his rendition of «Tramway» by Claude Simon. Committee The ministry also announced the names of the committee that will evaluate proposals for the translation of works of contemporary Greek literature into foreign languages. The president is writer and literary critic Vangelis Moschos and the members are National Book Center director Catherine Velissaris and translators Constantinos Palaiologos, David Connolly and Andrea Schellinger. The committee is appointed for three years. Launch; reading relay «The Photographic Journeys of Yiannis Maillis,» published by Adam and edited by Evi Antonatou and Marie Mauzi, is being launched at 7 p.m. today at the Danish Institute (14A Chairefontos, Plaka, tel 210.324.4644). A bilingual volume in Greek and English, it brings the photographer’s love of Greece and the sea to a wider public. The National Book Center and Entefktyrio magazine are holding a reading relay in Thessaloniki tomorrow (Underground Entefktyrio, 9 Desperai). Twenty readers – including artists, writers, actors and a winemaker – will take it in turns to read from the work of Emmanouil Roidis to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the writer’s death. There will be musical accompaniment from Dora Dakou on guitar and Alexandra Triantafyllou on harmonica.
