Alexandria hosts events in memory of C.P. Cavafy

The Hellenic Foundation for Culture’s branch in Alexandria, Egypt, has welcomed the new year with a series of 15 events, with a duration of approximately two months, from last week, February 2, when they started, to March 31. The events include numerous film screenings, art exhibitions, rock concerts and the annual «Cavafia,» a series of lectures, music and cinema activities dedicated to the poet Constantine Cavafy and organized in collaboration with the Greek Embassy in Alexandria and the Cairo Cultural Center. This year’s «Cavafia» will run from March 9 to 11. Film screenings of six recently made Greek films begin tonight at the foundation’s Cinema Hall, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandria’s new library) and the Cairo Cultural Center. Starting February 20, a panorama of European cinema, featuring one film from each of the EU member states, will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in collaboration with Euro Film Fest (Dimitris Indares will represent Greece with his film «Totally Married»). During the festival, «Mediterranean City: A Dialogue of Cultures,» a cultural dialogue forum organized by the library, will take place with the participation of 12 Mediterranean cities. Finally, this year’s «Cavafia» will feature tributes to two great writers from Greece and Egypt: Greece’s Nikos Kazantzakis and Egypt’s Naguib Mahfouz, winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature. A rock concert will round off the events on March 31.
