Drama series at Herod Atticus Theater in June

A series of performances is being organized for the Cultural Olympiad in June, based on ancient drama at the Herod Atticus Theater, as part of the Athens Festival. Three of the plays are ancient Greek tragedies, one a work by Shakespeare and the other a contemporary play by Iakovos Kambanellis. There will be two foreign productions and, finances permitting, two new Greek productions. The great Spanish actress Nuria Espert is to appear in Euripides’ «Medea,» directed by Michalis Cacoyannis, a production that had great success last summer in Spain. An avant-garde Dutch theater company will perform Euripides’ «Bacchae.» The Theatro tis Anixis is staging Sophocles’ «Electra,» directed by Yiannis Margaritis, with famed Romanian actress Maya Morgenstern in the leading role. «A Comedy,» a new work by Kambanellis, is set in Hades. The Anichto Theatro will perform it under the direction of Giorgos Michailidis. Internationally renowned Lithuanian director Eymundos Necrosios will direct his company in a performance of Shakespeare’s «Macbeth.» The company was invited to perform in Greece by the Hellenic Festival.
