Bazaar, launch, poetry

There are book bargains galore at the annual book bazaar in Klafthmonos Square, with prices starting from as little as 1 euro. The bazaar, which runs from today to March 28, is organized by the Publishers’ League and Athens City Cultural Organization and is sponsored by Alpha television and radio. (At Klafthmonos Square, 10 a.m. – 9.45 p.m.) Karamanlis «Ousting Karamanlis» tells the story of three occasions when the late statesman Constantine Karamanlis was forced to resign. As prime minister he stepped down twice, in 1958 and 1963, and as president once, in 1985. Vassilis P. Papathanassopoulos, former presidential press office chief, tells the inside story of those three events in the career of a politician who set his stamp on 20th century Greece. Patakis is launching the book at 12.30 p.m. tomorrow, at the Athens Plaza Hotel, Syntagma (tel 210.365.0028). Voices of poets March 21, the spring equinox, is International Poetry Day and the voice of poets will be heard at the Benaki Museum on Pireos St. Among the poets whose works will be heard are Manolis Anagnostakis, Nasos Vagenas, Nanos Valaoritis, Kiki Dimoula, Yiannis Kontos, Thanassis Niarchos, Lefteris Poulios, Miltos Sachtouris and Elena Hourzouri. The event is organized by the museum, the Hellenic Authors’ Society and the Organization for the Promotion of Greek Culture. (At the Benaki Annex, 138 Pireos, 7 p.m., tel 210.345.3111.)
