Peter Greenaway returns to Greece for exhibition of his other artworks

Peter Greenaway, well known for his films, is a frequent visitor to Greece, particularly at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, where he presents his films, showcases his artworks and teaches cinema. Besides the silver screen, the celebrated director is also a master in creating images on canvas. Greenaway is expected in Athens for the opening of a retrospective exhibition of his artworks at the Hellenic-American Union (22 Massalias) on May 9. The tribute, «Peter Greenaway, Artworks ’63-’05» will cover a highly representative part of the director’s 42-year-old involvement in painting. A number of works were executed in the last five years and are going on public display for the first time. The tribute aims to show how Greenaway’s works are complimentary and explanatory, not just to his films but all his other artistic activities, including opera and literature. Rich color Greenaway’s paintings and drawings lie at the core of his artistic creation, capturing one’s attention through rich colors and a variety of means of expression. In the first part of the upcoming exhibition, the canvas appears to be a table surface or a notice board. On that surface, the artist then goes on to paste all sorts of materials, ranging from torn newspapers and old posters to comics and photographs. In the second part, Greenaway explores his fascination with order and linguistic codes. At the Hellenic-American Union, the tribute will run to September 5 and will also include screenings of Greenaway’s films.
