Plessas opens festival

As the Athens Festival turns 50 this summer, this year’s events will open with a Mimis Plessas concert. The live performance, «Tributes and Memories,» is scheduled to take place at the Herod Atticus Theater on Friday, May 20. Alkistis Protopsalti, the evening’s lead singer, will appear in the second half of the concert to perform a number of beloved Plessas tunes, accompanied by a popular music orchestra. Also participating in the event is the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra, conducted by Christos Ktistakis; the Athens Municipal Choir, led by Stavros Beris; the Stavros Beris Jazz Quartet; vocalists Vassilis Saleas, Zoitsa Kouroukli, Constantinos Tsachouridis and Evi Kapatai, as well as tenor Antonis Koroneos, soprano Vassiliki Karayianni and baritone Spyros Klisas. One of the concert’s principal themes will be music Plessas wrote for film, but the event promises to be filled with surprises, memories, emotion and journeys. Tickets are already on sale at the Athens Festival’s box office at 39 Panepistimiou.
