Honored for excellence
His name is forever linked with the roof of the Athens Olympic Stadium, which became one of the hallmarks of last summer’s Olympiad. Far from the fanfare, the country’s second city has opted to honor Santiago Calatrava’s academic accomplishments in the art of construction. Calatrava will be named an honorary professor by the Thessaloniki Polytechnic’s Civil Engineering faculty on June 9 at a ceremony to be held at the institution’s hall. Seamless blend «Santiago Calatrava appears to be an inseparable combination of artist, architect and engineer,» the Polytechnic noted in its announcement to the prominent Spaniard. «Through his work, Calatrava aims not only for aesthetic appeal but technological perfection, as well as toward the creation of symbolic connections between projects. These are not always obvious but they attest to the ethos of the researcher-student. This explains why he has become one of the world’s most important architects and civil engineers in such a short period of time,» the Polytechnic’s statement added.
