Funk’s double whammy from Oh! My Garden, Dr Vodkatini

Two of the capital’s more entertaining live acts, the similar-minded, funk-oriented bands Oh! My Garden and Dr Vodkatini will be joining forces for a doubleheader show in Athens this Thursday evening. A commanding presence on stage, as reflected by an expanding fan base on the local club circuit, Oh! My Garden were formed in the mid-’90s by longtime friends Nikos Karantzis (guitar, vocals), Alexis Papaioannou (bass, vocals) and Themis Tataris (drums, percussion), the outfit’s nucleus, whose early focus on full-fledged rock was gradually refined into an infectious funk-oriented style. The addition of accomplished brass players Yiannis Papanastasiou (sax) and Manos Theodosakis (trumpet), and Yiannis Dimitriadis on keyboards have added a further dimension to the band’s developing sound. To date, the group has released two albums, «Avant Garden» and «Regroovable,» a mini-album, both on the independent label Studio II. Formed more recently, in 1998, the equally entertaining Dr Vodkatini, whose lineup is composed of experienced players with backgrounds in various other local outfits, combine soul, acid-jazz, funk, hip hop, and latin into their easy listening sound. The show is on Thursday, 11 p.m., at Club 22, 22 Vouliagmenis Ave, tel 010.924.9814. From Hell
