Poetry and new titles on Greek themes

Poetry at Compendium is on again, now in the new store just a few doors away from the old location (5 Nikodimou & Nikis, tel 210.322.1248). Tonight actress/writer Irene Theotokatou will read some of Becky Dennison Sakellariou’s poems, while the poet herself will read from her manuscript «The Importance of Bone.» Sakellariou has published in many US journals including The Beloit Poetry Review, Common Ground Review, White Pelican Review and RUNES, and has received two Pushcart Prize nominations. She has also had a number of poems published in anthologies, both in Greece and in the US. Dennison’s poems speak of the tensions of her two cultures, their languages, landscapes and uncertainties. The reading starts at 8 p.m. and an open-mike session will follow. Two book launches next week present three titles on Greek themes. Agra publishers are banding together with Kedros publishers to present «The Zembeki of Asia Minor,» by Thomas Korovinis, and «Time for Miracles,» by Costas Akrivos, at the Museum of Popular Instruments (1-3 Dioyenous, tel 210.325.4119). Writers Maro Douka and Yiannis Xanthoulis will present the books. Percussionist Loukas Metaxas, oud player Kyriakos Tapakis and violinist Giorgos Psaltis will play a concert of zembekiko and other traditional Greek and Turkish music from Asia Minor. Agra publishers presents Melaina Holi’s translations of Loukianos’s «Alexandros or the False Oracle,» and the anonymously written «Montanos the False Oracle,» on Thursday, June 30, in the garden of the Byzantine Museum (Vas. Sofias 22, tel 210.729.4926).
