Is Irene Papas, elected Woman of Europe for 2002, likely to be the new president of the Cultural Olympiad? Her name was raised as a likely candidate for the post as soon as poet Titos Patrikios resigned from it. Another former occupant of the post was film director Michalis Cacoyiannis, an able and wise personage. One hardly knows what to wish for! That Irene Papas should be the new president of the Cultural Olympiad, or that should things continue quietly at the Culture Ministry, which like Cronus, eats its own children. Whatever happens, time is running short. The Cultural Olympiad belongs in the present, not the future.
