Ancient Greece still leading the way

At a joint press conference held at Zappeion Hall last week, Minister of Tourism Development Dimitris Avramopoulos, Minister of the Aegean Aristotelis Pavlidis, Deputy Minister of Finance Petros Doukas and Deputy Culture Minister Petros Tatoulis presented an ambitious series of conferences to be held throughout the summer. The meetings aim to encourage in-depth discussion of the ancient Greek world and reflect how ancient thought may still be valid today in the economy and culture. Following three successful colloquia that took place in Santorini, Myconos and Athens last year, the series of meetings, Symposia Philosophiae Antiquae, continue this year with events scheduled to take place in Samos, Ephesus, Lesvos and Loutraki. «Polarity and Tension of Being: Pythagoras and Heraclitus,» will take place in Samos from July 16 to 22 and at Kousadasi, Turkey from July 22 to 29. «Poetry, Wisdom and Politics in Archaic Lesbos: Alcaeus, Sappho, Pittacus,» will convene in Molyvos, Lesvos, from August 7 to August 14. Finally, «The Megarians: Elitism and the History of Ancient Greek Rationality in the Classical and Early Hellenistic Periods,» will unfold at Loutraki from August 21 to August 27. Participating at the symposia are noted academics from around the world, including from Germany, Hungary, Israel, the United States, Greece, Britain, Russia, Italy, France and Switzerland.
