Triumphal moment and photos with Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace

Stamatina Kapranou-Kellett was named «Midwife of the Year» in London recently. The wife of retired British army officer Jim Kellett, Stamatina was surrounded by her family at the official ceremony: her son James, her daughter Maria as well as her four brothers, three of whom live in the United Kingdom (only one of them, Dimitris Kapranos, lives in Piraeus and is our journalist, a Kathimerini columnist). Deeply moved yet smiling, Stamatina was bestowed an honorary MBE, Member of the British Empire, by Queen Elizabeth, for her services and contribution to her field. Stamatina arrived in England in 1962, dreaming of becoming a doctor. She graduated in midwifery from the Royal School and embarked in a successful career. During the family celebration, she received a congratulatory phone call from her nephew, Alex Kapranos, son of academic Aristotelis. Alex is the leader of Franz Ferdinand, the band whose songs are topping the international charts. From Piraeus to Buckingham for the decoration, here’s a hopeful piece of news for 2006.
