A solo dance performance on the idea of the solitary hero

A soul in the midst of a mental desert, facing the challenge of a solitary existence and a refusal to compromise. That’s one way to describe the hero in «Superb Rooms» (Iperocha domatia), a 50-minute solo dance piece choreographed by Katerina Papageorgiou as part of adLIBdancetheatre project and performed by Tania Latarjet. Papageorgiou, a former dancer with the troupes of Oktana and Omada Edafous, began choreographing after a sojourn in New York. Five years ago she established her own company, which develops various projects with alternating artists. Papageorgiou, who likes basing her work on a text, used «Superb Rooms» by Yiannis Papachristos as inspiration. Neither the text nor the choreography follows a storyline. Tania Latarjet alternates roles, all of them built around the idea of a solitary hero. On the opposite side of the desert there lies the «city.» The piece is built around the confrontation of those symbolic spaces. For the purposes of the choreography, Papageorgiou observed everyday movements and incorporated many of them in her piece. She also worked closely with Latarjet for the final version. A French dancer, choreographer and actress, Latarjet has been involved in theater since childhood. Her varied artistic experiences include studying African dance in Ivory Coast, studying at Pina Bausch’s school, the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, and performing in both film and theater. Her performance in «Superb Rooms» is a moving, subtly surreal perusal of contemporary existence. Coti K has prepared the acoustic background and artist Lydia Dabasina is in charge of the stage design. One of her visual artworks is also part of the setting. «Superb Rooms» will be staged in a converted industrial space in Gazi (30 Triptolemou, tel 210.346.6055) for three remaining performances, Friday through Saturday.
