Taipei fair, book news

The Taipei Book Fair opened yesterday and runs until February 12. Greek books and writers are represented at the European stand – shared with France, Germany and Poland – which is this year’s guest of honor at the fair. Vassilis Vagios, who teaches Greek studies at Taipei University, and Professor Li Sher Shiueh of the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy will present the work of Rhea Galanaki on February 9 and 12. New releases Papasotiriou bookstores and Patakis publishers are launching C.A. Homenidis’s «The House and The Cell» on February 13 at 7 p.m. Speakers will be writer Vassilis Vassilikos, PASOK MP Theodoros Pangalos and journalist Alexis Papahelas. (Papasotiriou, Panepistimiou 37 & Korai.) Next Wednesday, February 15, sees the launch of a new book by Euro MP and former minister Nikos Sifounakis at the Old Parliament on Stadiou Street. Left Coalition leader Alekos Alavanos, ND Euro MP Yiannis Varvitsiotis, PASOK MP Theodoros Pangalos and Professor Nikos Alivizatos will present «Policy: Planning and Practice – The experience of 2000-2004.» Prizes The National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI) and Skai radio present the 2006 readers’ prize on February 14 at the Stoa tou Vivliou book arcade. The prize will go to a book chosen by readers’ committees, voted on by Skai’s listeners and coordinated by literary critic Vangelis Hadzivassileiou. (Pesmazoglou 5 & Stadiou, noon, tel 210.325.3989.) Entries for EKEBI’s screenplay awards – 7,000 euros for a feature and 3,000 euros for a short film based on a 19th century Greek novel or short story – will be accepted February 15 – June 30.
