Papadopoulos tribute extended

Fans of veteran songwriter Lefteris Papadopoulos have another opportunity to admire his work, since the tribute scheduled to take place at the Athens Concert Hall tonight and tomorrow has been extended for one more day. Two days were not enough to fit in all of Papadopolos’s friends, so singers George Dalaras, Marinella, Costas Makedonas, Melina Aslanidou and Onar will also interpret old Papadopoulos favorites at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. All participants attended the recent press conference, at which Papadopoulos expressed his joy over the event. «This tribute makes me very happy. But there are three of us behind every song,» he said. «I need to thank the composers and, of course, the great vocalists.» George Dalaras, who is also the concert’s organizer, described Papadopoulos as a phenomenon in the history of Greek recording. He has written more than 1,000 songs and over 800 of them are extremely popular. «But what is really important,» added the veteran Greek singer, «is that Lefteris is an ageless artist. There are people of four generations here today. Even school friends of my 18-year-old daughter’s are admirers of his.» The concert has been divided into three parts and includes songs by great Greek composers whose lyrics were penned by Papadopoulos. All the artists will join forces in the beginning, to welcome the audience with Yiannis Spanos’s festive «Xypnise i Poli» (The City is Awake) and songs by Stavros Xarhakos and Manos Loizos, while Dalaras will follow suit and lead the first part of the program. Athens Concert Hall, 1 Kokkali & Vas. Sofias, tel 210.728.2333. The concerts will start at 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, and at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday at the Alexandra Trianti Hall.
