African culture comes to Athens

An African feast will shake the blues away for all those returning to Athens from their summer holidays. Art festival The Mama Africa Art Festival will take place again at the Antonis Tritsis Park of Environmental Awareness in Ilion in Attica on September 2 and 3. The initiative for the festival belongs to the non-governmental organization European Network of Women (www.enow.gr). The event will feature lots of music, dance, books and photography exhibitions, mouth-watering African delicacies, percussion workshops and a bazaar of African folk art objects. The festival, which operates under the aegis of the African communities in Greece, hopes to garner as much money as possible in order to reinforce the activities of the European Network of Women in Africa, which include helping African women who are victims of human trafficking. It will also provide an opportunity for the problems that Greece’s African communities face on a daily basis to become part of social discussion. For two days, visitors can get acquainted with the rich African culture and enjoy concerts by well-known African music stars: Participants include Alpha Blondy (whose 2002 album «Merci» received the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album that year), reggae star Majek Fashek, Omar Faruk Tekbilek – who has a reputation both as a skillful musician and as a peace activist – Jambo Kenya and many local bands as well, including Rodes, Locomondo, De Traces, One Drop, Vox and others. The festival is to start at noon on both days. For information, tel 210.330.0413.
