Playwright honored in tribute

The Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDKE), along with the Municipality of Aghia Varvara and the Local Authorities Institute, are organizing a tribute to Iakovos Kambanellis tonight. The tribute to honor the playwright, who has been described as the father of postwar, modern Greek theater by theater expert Costas Georgoussopoulos, will take place at the Athens Concert Hall at 8.30 p.m. The event falls under the aegis of President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias. It will also include a musical set, with compositions by Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Stavros Xarhakos, Giorgos Despotidis and Theodoros Antoniou, featuring lyrics by Kambanellis from his works «Mauthausen,» «I Geitonia ton Angelon» (The Angels’ Quarter), «I Avli ton Thavmaton» (The Yard of Miracles), «Mia Komodia» (A Comedy) and others. Giorgos Hadzinassios will lead the concert, joined by singers Lydia Angelopoulou, Costas Thomaidis, Vassilis Lekkas, Fanis Mezinis, Stamatis Beris and Theodosia Stiga. The Athens Symphonietta Orchestra will perform under the baton of Eleftherios Kalkanis, while journalist Stavros Theodorakis will coordinate the event. Speeches will be given by Constantinos Stefanis (president of the Athens Academy), Paris Koukoulopoulos (president of both KEDKE and the Local Authorities Institute), Dimitris Tsatsos, Lambros Michos and Kambanellis himself.
