A tribute to screen letters

Letters, the most romantic form of correspondence, are the subject of a series of films to be screened at the Trianon Filmcenter for a week starting tomorrow. Jointly organized by the Festival of Thessaloniki and the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and funded by the Greek Post Office, the screenings present cinematic epistles from the 1940s till the present day. Letters, postmen and messages play a leading role in all the films. The films The program was presented on Tuesday by festival Vice President Antonis Kikoukas, Greek Filmcenter President Diagoras Chronopoulos, Post Office President Athanassios Dimitrakopoulos and Deputy Transport Minister Spyros Vouyias, who came up with the idea for the series. The following films will be shown: “Jour de Fete” (Holiday), by Jacques Tati, «Le Corbeau” (The Crow) by Henri-Georges Clouzot, «Letter from a Stranger,» by Max Ophuls, «Les Deux Anglaises et le Continent” (Two Englishwomen in Europe) by Francois Truffaut, «The Photograph,» by Nikos Papadakis, «Les Liaisons Dangereuses» (Dangerous Liaisons), by Stephen Frears, «Cyrano,» by Jean-Paul Rappeneau, «Il Postino» (The Postman), by Michael Radford, «Junk Mail,» by Pal Sletaune, «Central Station,» by Walter Salles, and «Quills« by Philip Kaufman. The series also includes some short films: «Letter from Charleroi,» by Lambros Liapoulos and «Letter from America,» by Lakis Papastathis. Philately Throughout the series the Post Office will run a small booth in the cinema where the public can view and buy philatelic products such as albums and full series of stamps. A system for making personal stamps will be set up in the foyer where visitors can print stamps made from their own photographs. “Letters in Film,” at the Trianon Filmcenter, 21 Kodringtonos, tel 010.821.5469.
